Appeals Tribunal Upholds Rivers Lawmakers Election

The Rivers State election Petitions Appeal Tribunal sitting in Abuja today upheld the election of Honorable Kelechi Godspower Nwogu of the PDP as the member validly elected to represent Omuma State constituency in the Rivers State House of Assembly.

Honorable Nwogu who was declared winner by INEC after the elections which took place on April 19, 2015 was first dragged to the elections petitions tribunal in Abuja by his APC rival and major contender for the seat in what analysts said was a man basking in the support by former Rivers State Governor and Minister for Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi.

Despite losing the case in the Tribunal, the APC candidate with the support of Rotimi Amaechi went up to the Appeals Tribunal in Abuja, despite having an almost impossible case in a show of desperation in the APC’s “Kelechi Nwogu Must Go” agenda.

This analysts claim may not be unconnected with the huge role Honorable Nwogu played in resisting the former Governor Amaechi from pocketing the 7th Rivers State House of Assembly. Also Honorable Kelechi Nwogu’s unflinching support for Governor Nyesom Wike has not gone down well with Amaechi and the Rivers APC, as they saw him as ‘big fish’ in a youthful body who must be removed from office by all means if only to warn others.

The panel consisted of Hon Justice Tijani Abubakar, JCA, Hon Justice U. A. Ogakwu, JCA and Hon. Justice M. A. Oredola who presided and read the judgement.

Honorable Nwogu’s residence in Port Harcourt has been overtaken by joyous supporters and his Omuma constituent members who trudged in their hundreds to felicitate with him and show their unflinching support.

Our efforts to get the APC candidate or Rivers APC chairman Davis Ikanya to react to this huge loss was not successful as their mobile phones were switched off and our text messages has not been replied as at press time.
