Terrorism: Militants Submit Arms In Rivers State

Following the inauguration of Rivers State Amnesty Programme Committee, a militant group has surrendered its arms. Governor Nyesom Wike had issued a 60-day window period to militants in the region to surrender their weapons or risk military action.

A militant group led by one self-styled General Don Wanney led other members of the group operating in the Ogba/ Egbema/ Ndoni local government area to surrender their guns to the state government.

The governor had said: “Anyone who has surrendered his arms and has followed through the process laid out for the amnesty will be pardoned. Such a person will not be prosecuted.

“This committee has 60days to complete its assignment. After the 60days, any cultist or militant who fails to subscribe to the amnesty programme will face the full weight of the law”. A few months ago, Governor Rochas Okorocha received more than 200 Avengers who have been terrorising Imo state.

Security agents were on hand to witness the disarmament ceremony. The governor said: “I am here to rescue my children so that there will be no shooting by the Police and Army. I am here also to receive your message and deliver them to the Federal Government. I am speaking to you as a father of the land and assure you of proper reintegration into the society.”
